Hyundai Motor Secures Lithium Supplies from Chinese Firms Amid Global Uncertainty

January 19, 2024

Hyundai Motor, a major player in the electric vehicle (EV) sector, has further secured its foothold in the EV battery market by signing a lithium supply deal with Ganfeng Lithium Co., a leading Chinese supplier. This agreement, effective until December 31, 2027, guarantees Hyundai a steady supply of battery-grade lithium hydroxide for the next four years.

Lithium hydroxide, a critical material in the production of high-capacity EV batteries, is valued for its compatibility with nickel, enhancing battery efficiency and storage capacity. Hyundai's decision to secure this essential component underscores the company's commitment to advancing its EV technology and mitigating risks amid global supply chain challenges.

Hyundai's latest contract follows a similar four-year agreement with Shenzhen Chengxin Lithium, emphasizing the automaker's proactive approach to ensuring a consistent lithium supply. However, Hyundai has not disclosed the financial details or the exact volume of lithium to be supplied under these contracts.

These strategic moves by Hyundai Motor come at a time when the global automotive industry is increasingly shifting towards EV production, placing a premium on securing stable supplies of key battery materials like lithium.
