Lifthium Energy Secures €21 Million in Spanish Government Support for Green Lithium Refinery

September 20, 2024

Lifthium Energy, part of the José de Mello Group, has received €21 million in support from the Spanish government to construct a green lithium refinery in Torrelavega, located in the Cantabria region. The funding, announced by Minister for Industry and Tourism Jordi Hereu at the 1st Spanish-Chinese Automotive Summit in Madrid, is part of the EU-funded Strategic Project for the Recovery and Economic Transformation of the Electric and Connected Vehicle (PERTE VEC).

The project, which involves an investment of €480 million, aims to create 200 direct jobs. While Lifthium Energy has not yet made a final investment decision, the company continues to evaluate both Spain and Portugal as potential sites for the facility. In May, Salvador de Mello, CEO of the José de Mello Group, indicated that factors such as incentives and the speed of licensing would influence the final choice between Estarreja in Portugal and Torrelavega in Spain.

Lifthium Energy was established last year by Bondalti, the José de Mello Group's chemical production and water treatment unit. Bondalti currently holds a 15% minority stake in the company, with the remaining ownership under the group's direct control.
