Rock Tech Secures €100 Million Funding for Lithium Refinery in Brandenburg
Rock Tech Lithium is set to receive €100 million in funding to establish a lithium refinery in Guben, Brandenburg (Spree-Neisse). The majority of the funds will come from the state of Brandenburg, with the Federal Railway Authority (EBA) contributing around €10 million to support rail transportation infrastructure for the facility.
Rock Tech is also negotiating federal guarantees amounting to €400 million to secure loans for the project. CEO Dirk Harbecke expressed confidence in completing the remaining financing steps for Guben in the coming months.
Brandenburg's Minister of Economic Affairs, Jörg Steinbach, welcomed the progress, noting that the investment marks a significant step following the issuance of construction and operating permits by the State Environment Agency in May 2024. Steinbach emphasized the project's role in bolstering the region's electromobility value chain.
The Canadian company Rock Tech Lithium focuses on mining and processing lithium for battery cell production, essential for electromobility. The State Office for the Environment granted a partial permit for the Guben plant in May.
