Rock Tech to Build €800 Million Lithium Hydroxide Plant in Germany, Aiming for Market Leadership

August 28, 2024

Canadian-German start-up Rock Tech is set to construct a lithium hydroxide factory in Guben, Germany, near the Polish border. The company expects to secure financing for the €800 million project soon, with production anticipated to begin between late 2026 and early 2027.

Despite the slow pace of electromobility adoption in Europe, particularly in Germany, Rock Tech's CEO Dirk Harbecke remains confident in the project's success. The Guben plant is a key component of Rock Tech's broader strategy to secure a significant share of the growing lithium market.

In addition to the Guben facility, Rock Tech is planning to build a second lithium converter in Ontario, Canada. The company aims to capture a 30% market share in both Europe and North America, with an annual production capacity of up to 120,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide under optimal conditions.
