Rosatom Initiates Lithium Exploration and Processing in Edo State

March 21, 2024

Rosatom, a leading nuclear energy corporation in Europe, has embarked on lithium exploration activities in Edo State, Nigeria, following approval from the state government to establish a lithium processing plant. Enaholo Ojiefoh, the Commissioner of Mining and Energy, revealed in a discussion with journalists in Benin City that Rosatom's team has been conducting exploration since October 2023. The state has allocated land for the construction of the processing plant, which marks a significant step towards the production of lithium batteries locally.

This development is part of a broader trend in Edo State, where multiple multinational companies are setting up processing facilities, indicating the solid mineral market's maturity within the region. The commissioner highlighted that Edo's solid mineral sector model has garnered interest from other states, with plans to share its master plan to foster sector-wide growth and competitiveness.

Additionally, Governor Godwin Obaseki expressed gratitude towards the Otaru of Auchi, Aliru Momoh Ikelebe III, for his continuous support and guidance throughout his tenure. During a visit to break the Ramadan fast with the Otaru and other traditional leaders from Edo North Senatorial District, Obaseki noted the significance of Ramadan and Lent coinciding, emphasizing the importance of unity and reflection during these times.

The governor's acknowledgment of the Otaru's role in ensuring government stability and his appreciation for the advice provided over the years underscores the importance of collaboration between traditional leadership and government in achieving socio-economic development. This initiative by Rosatom, supported by the state government and traditional leaders, highlights a promising future for Edo's energy sector and its potential impact on Nigeria's broader economic landscape.
