MMG Unlocks New Opportunities for Botswana’s Khoemacau Copper Mining
The acquisition of Khoemacau Copper Mining by MMG has opened doors to realizing the full potential of this resource-rich project in Botswana. MMG, a global mining company with operations across four continents, brings the financial backing and technical expertise needed to drive growth and transformation.
Logic Sebopeng, General Manager of the mine, described the acquisition as a turning point for operations. Construction of a backfill plant has already begun, aiming to maximize resource extraction by creating a paste from mine waste and additives to support underground construction. “With this plant, we’ll be able to recover 90% of the ore, significantly boosting the value of current operations,” Sebopeng explained.
The project currently produces 60 kilotonnes of copper annually, with plans for expansion. Contractors are being mobilized for detailed planning, which includes opening three additional underground mines. The feasibility study for the expansion is underway, with the goal of increasing copper production. This development is expected to deliver substantial economic benefits, create jobs, and transform Botswana’s North West region.
Sebopeng highlighted that the expansion could double the mine’s staff, which currently numbers close to 2,000 employees. He attributed past delays to capital constraints, which MMG’s involvement has now alleviated. The site, located within the highly prospective Kalahari Copper Belt, positions Botswana as a key player in future copper production.
Development of the expanded operation is slated to begin in early 2026, with plans to build a capacity of 4.5 million tonnes of ore, fed by both existing and new mines. “This project offers immense growth and opportunities for young people while delivering value for all stakeholders,” Sebopeng said.
Mmama Mhlanga-Fichani, Director of People and Communications, emphasized the transformative impact of MMG’s global network. “We now have access to advanced technologies and exciting opportunities for development, bringing stability and growth to the community,” she noted, encouraging employees to embrace the changes ahead.
