Eramet’s Ambitious Plans for Lithium and Nickel Production
Eramet's Independent Lithium Ventures
Eramet, a prominent mining group, recently announced during an investor day that it has no plans for a partnership with Imerys in lithium. CEO Christel Bories emphasized Eramet's commitment to its independent projects, particularly in lithium production expansion.
Strategic Investments in Argentina and Indonesia
The company disclosed an ambitious investment plan, allocating approximately €1.9 billion for the 2024-2026 period. This investment aims to enhance cash-generating operations and foster growth, focusing on the energy transition sector. Key projects include the Centenario lithium project in Argentina, with a second development phase planned to produce an additional 30,000 tonnes per year of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE). This is in addition to the first phase's target of 24,000 tonnes, scheduled to commence production in Q2 2024. Eramet has also recently acquired a significant lithium concession in Chile's Atacama region, spending an initial $95 million (€89 million).
Expansion in Nickel Production
In Indonesia, Eramet is working to double production at its Weda Bay nickel mine, partnering with Tsingshan. The goal is to increase output to 60 million wet metric tons by 2026. Furthermore, Eramet plans to collaborate with BASF to process some of this ore into battery-grade nickel and cobalt, with a decision expected next year.
Enhancements in Manganese Ore Production
In Gabon, where Eramet operates the world's largest manganese mine, plans are underway to raise ore production to 8.5 million tons by 2026, up from around 7 million in 2023. This increase is primarily attributed to improvements in the rail transport link.
Eramet's strategic focus on lithium and nickel underlines its commitment to playing a significant role in the energy transition and battery development.
