Rio Tinto Lifts Alumina Export Restrictions from Australian Plants

Rio Tinto has lifted the restrictions on alumina exports from its Australian plants in Gladstone, which had been in place since May, according to a report by S&P Global. The restrictions were originally introduced due to a sharp reduction in natural gas supplies to the plants, as noted by Bloomberg.

The legally justified suspension of Rio Tinto's compliance with the terms of contracts with third parties added pressure to the aluminium market, which relies heavily on a stable supply of alumina. In recent months, supply chain issues have been compounded not only by Rio Tinto's challenges but also by similar difficulties faced by other companies in the industry. This situation has contributed to a rise in alumina prices.

Smelting plants that process raw materials into aluminium have been among the most affected by the disruptions. Among Rio Tinto's affected facilities are the Yarwun and Queensland Alumina refineries, both located in Gladstone.
