December 16, 2024

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has reported domestic primary aluminum production of 54,600 metric tons (t) in September 2024. The average daily production for the month was 1,820 t, remaining consistent with August 2024 but showing a 9% decline compared to September 2023 and a 10% drop from September 2022.

Total aluminum recovered from scrap in September 2024 amounted to 286,000 t, reflecting a 4% decrease from August 2024 and aligning closely with the 284,000 t recorded in September 2023. This figure, however, represented a 4% increase compared to September 2022. Of the total scrap recovered, 160,000 t came from new scrap, while 126,000 t was derived from old scrap.

Aluminum imports for consumption during the first nine months of 2024 totaled 4.19 million metric tons (Mt), a slight decline from the 4.20 Mt recorded in the same period of 2023.

The average U.S. spot market price for primary aluminum ingot in September 2024 was $1.30 per pound, marking a 4% increase from August 2024 and a 9% rise compared to September 2023.
