Hindustan Zinc Signs MoU with AEsir Technologies for Zinc Battery Supply

Hindustan Zinc Limited, an Indian zinc producer, has signed a memorandum of understanding with AEsir Technologies, a US-based company specializing in zinc battery technologies. This agreement makes Hindustan Zinc the preferred supplier of zinc for AEsir’s battery production.

Zinc-based batteries, an emerging alternative in energy storage solutions, are known for delivering higher power at lower costs, with minimal maintenance and lifespans of up to 20 years. This makes them suitable for large-scale industrial energy storage applications.

The MoU aligns with Hindustan Zinc’s strategy to explore new applications of zinc in the clean energy sector. Zinc batteries are gaining attention due to their corrosion resistance, cost-effectiveness, recyclability, stability, and environmental friendliness. They offer broader temperature tolerance and reliable backup power for extended periods compared to other metals. Additionally, zinc batteries are built with non-flammable materials, are non-reactive to air and water, and produce no toxic fumes, ensuring greater safety. They are also recyclable and have a greenhouse gas footprint six times lower than other technologies.

AEsir Technologies’ Nickel Zinc (NiZn) batteries have shown reliability and success in high-end sectors like defense, renewable energy, critical infrastructure for data centers, and 5G telecom. Continuous improvements have resolved issues such as electrolyte dry-out, metal branching, and zinc migration.

The global energy storage market is projected to grow annually by 21%, reaching 442 GWh by 2030, according to a recent Bloomberg NEF report.
