BMW Partners with Redwood Materials to Recycle EV Batteries in the U.S.

September 20, 2024

BMW is teaming up with Redwood Materials to recycle lithium-ion batteries from the German automaker's electric vehicles across the United States. Redwood, which is constructing a $3.5 billion battery recycling facility in South Carolina, will receive end-of-life batteries from BMW's U.S. network, including over 700 locations such as dealerships and distribution centers.

These recycled batteries will allow Redwood to recover valuable minerals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel, which can then be used to produce new batteries for electric vehicles. The collaboration covers batteries from BMW, MINI, Rolls Royce, and BMW Motorad motorcycles.

Redwood estimates that between 95% and 98% of critical battery minerals can be returned to the supply chain, supporting a fully circular battery system in the U.S. This partnership aligns with BMW’s long-term sustainability goal of creating a circular, sustainable supply chain for electric vehicles.
