Boliden and Komatsu Launch World’s First Convertible Electric Mining Truck

September 25, 2024

Boliden and Komatsu have announced a significant step in their ongoing collaboration to electrify and automate mining trucks at the Aitik open-pit copper mine. In a world-first development, the two companies introduced a mining truck that can be converted to battery operation, marking a new milestone in the move towards fossil-free mining.

At Aitik, Boliden has already implemented electrified trolley systems to reduce diesel consumption and transitioned 17 mining trucks to autonomous haulage systems. Building on this progress, the latest development was presented at MINEXPO in Las Vegas, the world’s largest mining equipment expo. The showcased truck, Komatsu’s Power Agnostic 930E, can be converted from diesel to various fossil-free power sources, providing increased flexibility in reducing carbon emissions.

The new truck will be tested in a production environment at Aitik, aiming to further develop the technology for potential widespread implementation.

"We continue to make important strides towards high productivity and low climate impact in our mining operations. I’m extremely proud that we remain at the forefront of this development, serving as a global role model in the industry," said Stefan Romedahl, President of Boliden's Business Area Mines.
