China’s BTR Group to Build $366 Million Battery Materials Plant in Morocco

August 16, 2024

China’s BTR Group, a specialist in lithium-ion battery materials, has announced plans to construct a manufacturing plant in Morocco’s Tangier Technology City. The project, valued at $366 million, is expected to take two years to complete. Once operational, the facility will have an annual production capacity of 60,000 tons of lithium-ion battery anode materials, aimed at enhancing BTR’s service offerings to international customers.

This development aligns with Morocco’s strategic focus on expanding its automotive industry, particularly in the production of electric car batteries. The country has set ambitious goals to become a global leader in electric vehicle manufacturing, with Industry Minister Riyad Mezzour highlighting Morocco’s potential to become the most competitive platform for electric car production by 2030.

Earlier this year, Morocco signed a significant investment agreement with BTR, marking the construction of a cathode factory dedicated to electric vehicles. This venture is expected to create 2,500 jobs and represents a key milestone in Morocco’s push to establish itself as a hub for green mobility.

Investment Minister Mohcine Jazouli emphasized that this project is just the beginning of several major investments planned in Morocco’s electric mobility sector, reinforcing the country’s commitment to playing a central role in the global automotive industry’s transition to green energy.
