Global Alumina Production Holds Steady in August, Aluminium Output Falls

Global alumina production held steady in August, reaching 12.51 million tons, according to the International Aluminium Institute. The output was virtually unchanged both from July's figures and from the same period last year.

Daily average global alumina production saw a slight increase, reaching 403,612 tons in August, compared to the revised figure of 403,581 tons for July.

China's alumina production, which accounts for more than 59% of global output, rose marginally by 0.1% on the month to 7.4 million tons. Year-on-year, China's production increased by 1.4%.

In other regions, Oceania's alumina output dropped from 1.45 million tons in July to 1.39 million tons in August. Meanwhile, production in Africa and Asia, excluding China, climbed to 1.23 million tons from 1.21 million tons in the previous month. Europe recorded a 2% increase, with production rising to 641,000 tons in August from 628,000 tons in July. South America also saw growth, with output up by 2.9% to 1.02 million tons.

In addition to the alumina data, the latest figures show a slight decline in global primary aluminium production. Output fell by 0.1% in August to 6.18 million tons from 6.19 million tons in July.

As of 1502 IST, the most actively traded October aluminium contract on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India rose by 0.7%, reaching 240.90 rupees ($2.88) per kg. On the London Metal Exchange, the three-month aluminium contract was up 1.2%, trading at $2,643 per ton.
