Global Aluminium Production Drops in June; China Leads Decline

Global production of primary aluminium fell by 3.2% in June to 5.94 million tons, according to data from the International Aluminium Institute. On an annual basis, production saw a 3.2% increase from 5.76 million tons recorded in June last year. The global daily average aluminium production rose slightly to 198,000 tons in June from a revised 197,935 tons in May.

In China, aluminium production dropped by 118,000 tons to 3.53 million tons in June. China, which accounts for over 59% of global aluminium production, saw its daily average production marginally decrease to 117,666 tons last month from 117,677 tons in May.

In Asia, excluding China, production declined to 394,000 tons in June from 407,000 tons in May. In Africa, output fell by 3,000 tons to 130,000 tons in May.

The Gulf Cooperation Council, another major aluminium-producing region after China, saw a reduction in production by 18,000 tons to 507,000 tons in June. Production in Western and Central Europe also fell slightly to 234,000 tons from 236,000 tons in May. In North America, aluminium production decreased by 13,000 tons to 325,000 tons in June, while South America saw a decline of 4,000 tons to 125,000 tons.

In contrast, global alumina production in May rose by 2.4% month-on-month to 12.04 million tons, as per the latest available data.

At 1145 IST, the most-active August contract of aluminium on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India was down 0.4% at 212.80 rupees per kg. Meanwhile, the three-month futures contract on the London Metal Exchange was down 0.2% at $2,289.50 per ton.
