Rwanda and Rio Tinto Collaborate on Lithium Exploration
The Rwandan government and Rio Tinto Minerals Development, a UK-based mining company, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for lithium exploration in Rwanda's Western Province. This collaboration aims to explore untapped natural resources in the country's mining sector.
Yamina Karitanyi, CEO of Rwanda Mines, Petroleum, and Gas Board, emphasized that Rio Tinto's involvement signifies Rwanda's commitment to unlocking the mining sector's potential. The partnership aligns with efforts to modernize the sector while adhering to the highest Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards.
Lawrence Dechambenoit, Global Head of External Affairs at Rio Tinto, stated that the collaboration focuses on searching and exploring lithium, a highly sought-after mineral globally. Rio Tinto, operating in 35 countries, sees this partnership as an opportunity to apply its global experience to accelerate the search for primary lithium deposits in Rwanda's Western Province.
This initiative follows Rio Tinto's goal to work with Rwanda in exploring lithium, a vital component in electronic products. The agreement underscores Rwanda's strategy to tap into its natural resources, positioning the country for further economic development in the mining sector.
