Vedanta’s Alumina Output Jumps 36% Year-on-Year, Zinc Production Steady

July 4, 2024

Vedanta announced a substantial 36% year-on-year increase in alumina production at its Lanjigarh refinery, reaching 539 kilotonnes (kt) due to new capacity. This represents an 11% rise compared to the previous quarter's production of 484 kt in March and a significant jump from the 395 kt produced in Q1FY24.

The company also reported a 3% year-on-year increase in cast metal aluminum production at its smelters, totaling 596 kt, attributed to better operational performance. The metal production remained flat on a quarter-on-quarter basis.

Vedanta's mined metal production in the first quarter stood at 263 kt, marking a 2% year-on-year increase due to improved mined metal grades. However, this was 12% lower than the previous quarter, reflecting the routine mine preparation activities carried out every year in the first quarter.

Refined metal production was reported at 262 kt, showing a 1% year-on-year increase but a 4% decrease quarter-on-quarter due to plant availability and pyro operations on lead mode for the latter part of Q1FY25. Refined zinc production was at 211 kt, up 1% year-on-year and down 4% quarter-on-quarter.

Refined lead production for Q1FY25 was 51 kt, reflecting a 2% year-on-year increase but a 3% decrease quarter-on-quarter. Saleable silver production was at 167 tonnes, down 7% year-on-year and 12% quarter-on-quarter. In the international zinc business, mined metal production dropped significantly by 45%, from 68 kt in Q1FY24 to 38 kt in Q1FY25.
