Aurubis Invests €16 Million to Boost Production and Efficiency at Stolberg Copper Rolling Mill

October 14, 2024

Stolberg copper producer Aurubis has invested approximately €16 million in two new core units for its copper rolling mill in Stolberg. The Hamburg-based company aims to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions while increasing production capacity. With around 400 employees, Aurubis Stolberg specializes in producing high-precision copper and copper alloy strips and wires.

The newly commissioned bell annealing plant, valued at about €9 million, can now be operated with electricity, unlike the previous plant that relied on natural gas. This upgrade is expected to save around 20% in energy consumption and reduce CO2 emissions by 25%, according to Aurubis.

In addition, a new stretch-bending plant worth €7 million has also begun operation. It is expected to enhance production capacity and improve occupational safety. The stretch-bending process ensures greater flatness of metal strips and helps alleviate material stress before cutting the strips to the desired width. The new system aims to enable more efficient and flexible production.

"The commissioning of these important core units of our strip production is another milestone for our site, three years after the catastrophic flood in the region," said Benjamin Cappi, Managing Director of Aurubis Stolberg. "We are strengthening our process stability and reliability. The units have already been smoothly integrated into our day-to-day production."
