Aurubis and Coficab Renew Contract to Boost Sustainability in Automotive Supply Chain

October 16, 2024

Aurubis, a leading global provider of non-ferrous metals and one of the largest copper recyclers, and Coficab, a major player in the automotive industry's wires and cables sector, have renewed a multi-year contract for the supply of copper wire rod. This renewed contract aims to expand sustainable volume growth in the automotive wire and cable segment, supporting the automotive industry's drive towards greener solutions.

The partnership underscores the importance of sustainably sourcing copper, a key component in electrification as the automotive industry pursues a greener future. Both companies are combining responsibly sourced primary copper with a substantial share of recycled material to maintain supply security while promoting environmental responsibility.

The renewed collaboration is part of an effort to promote sustainability across the copper-based value chain. Aurubis and Coficab are committed to maintaining the highest quality standards in copper wire production while striving to reduce carbon footprints. The partnership emphasizes transparency through sustainability key performance indicators, focusing on metrics such as CO2 emissions and the use of recycled copper. Aurubis updates life cycle assessments annually for a wide range of its products as part of its transparency efforts.

Both companies have aligned their goals with the Paris Agreement and share a target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Aurubis has already made significant strides, reducing the carbon footprint of its copper cathodes by more than forty percent since 2013, and setting ambitious targets for future reductions in emissions by 2030. Coficab has also committed to a fifty percent reduction in its CO2 footprint by 2030, compared to 2020 levels, focusing on energy efficiency, greener energy sources, circularity, and a more sustainable supply chain.

Martin Sjoberg, Senior Vice President of Commercial at Aurubis, stated, "Aurubis produces approximately nine hundred thousand tons of rod in Europe, a significant portion of which serves the automotive industry. This renewed collaboration with Coficab reinforces our commitment to transparency and sustainability across the supply chain. Coficab's sustainability roadmap is well-aligned with Aurubis' Tomorrow Metals initiative, ensuring that our partners are equipped to meet the sustainability challenges of today and the future."

Coficab has also laid out a comprehensive sustainability plan, emphasizing the reduction of its carbon footprint through energy efficiency, product innovation, and recycling initiatives. By reusing production scrap and recycling end-of-life products, Coficab aims to transition towards circularity, enhancing the environmental performance of its operations.
