Follow-Up Meeting for Alcoa’s San Cibrao Plant Set for December 9 in Madrid

December 2, 2024

The follow-up meeting concerning Alcoa's plant in San Cibrao, located in the municipality of Cervo (Lugo), is scheduled to take place in Madrid on December 9 at 11:30 a.m. This meeting will involve representatives from the company, workers, and relevant administrative bodies. The works council, which has long advocated for this meeting, confirmed the date, noting that it had initially been due in September.

The works council has also requested the presence of the President of the Xunta, along with Spain's Minister of Industry and the Minister for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, citing their critical contributions to the issues on the agenda.

In addition, Alcoa has scheduled a bilateral meeting with the committee for December 2. Initially planned to be held in Madrid, this meeting will instead take place in San Cibrao, following a request from the workers.

Last weekend, the Alcoa committee resumed its protests by blocking the A-8 highway in Ribadeo (Lugo) in response to what it perceives as a lack of compliance with the viability agreement for the plant.

This development follows an agreement in principle between Alcoa and Ignis Eqt, under which Ignis will invest $25 million in the San Cibrao complex, contributing 25% towards an overall investment of $100 million, with Alcoa funding the remaining 75%.

On November 6, Alcoa and the works committee held a bilateral meeting in A Mariña, during which Alcoa confirmed its commitment to contribute an additional $100 million to the existing $100 million cash flow for the plant. Alcoa also guaranteed the continuation of refinery production and plans to operate at least 75% of the vats by 2025.
