Novelis Releases 2023 Sustainability Report

Atlanta-based Novelis, prominent in the aluminum rolling and recycling industry, has disclosed its environmental milestones in the sustainability report for the fiscal year 2023, which covers April 1, 2022, to March 31, 2023.

Steve Fisher, president and CEO of Novelis, highlighted the company's steps in emission reduction and the inclusion of recycled content in their operations. The company aimed to decrease its absolute carbon emissions by 30% by 2026, compared to 2016 levels. By the end of fiscal year 2023, Novelis reported a 14% reduction across scopes 1, 2, and 3.

Emphasizing the role of recyclability in aluminum, Fisher mentioned Novelis' work in strengthening closed-loop recycling partnerships and innovations to increase the use of recycled metal. Other key takeaways from the report include:

  • A 17% reduction in carbon emissions intensity from 2016.
  • A 10% reduction in waste-to-landfill intensity since 2020.
  • Donations totaling $7.5 million to charitable causes.
  • Incorporating 61% recycled content across global products in 2023.
  • Recycling 2.3 million tonnes of aluminum, contributing to the recovery of over 82 billion beverage cans.

Lastly, the company's partnership with nonprofit FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was highlighted, aimed at introducing young students to fields like engineering and coding.
