Sibanye-Stillwater Suspends Queensland Operations Due to Bushfire Damage

October 18, 2024

Sibanye-Stillwater announced the suspension of operations at its Century mine in Queensland, Australia, due to regional bushfires that caused significant damage to surface piping infrastructure. The South African precious-metals miner reported extensive loss of feed and water lines connecting the hydro mine to the processing plant, along with other key service lines.

The company has already placed orders for the replacement of the damaged piping, and operations at Century are expected to remain suspended until November 16.

As a result of the disruption, Sibanye-Stillwater expects zinc metal production for the fourth quarter to be approximately 9,680 payable tons lower than originally forecast.

The company stated that its operational teams are actively working to manage the impact of the bushfire both at the mine and in neighboring areas.
