Hydro Energy Secures Long-Term Power Purchase Agreement to Boost Low-Carbon Aluminum Production

April 15, 2024

Hydro Energy has announced a significant step in bolstering its renewable energy utilization by signing a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Swiss energy supplier Alpiq. The deal, spanning from 2025 to 2033, involves the supply of 0.54 terawatt hours of power and will be a key component of Hydro’s Nordic power portfolio.

This strategic agreement is aimed at reinforcing Hydro's commitment to sustainable aluminum production. Hydro's existing power portfolio consists of 9.4 terawatt hours per year from its own power production and about 10 terawatt hours from other long-term contracts. The newly signed contract will deliver power at price area SE 3, aligning with Hydro’s operational areas.

Hydro emphasizes that access to renewable energy through agreements such as this is crucial for maintaining its competitive edge in the global market. The company highlights its capability to produce aluminum with a carbon footprint approximately 75 percent lower than the global average, thanks to modern technology and sustainable energy sources.
