Novelis Invests $90 Million to Boost UK Beverage Can Recycling Capacity
Novelis has announced a significant investment of approximately $90 million to enhance its recycling capacity for used beverage cans (UBCs) at its Latchford plant in the UK. This project aims to increase the recycling capacity by 85 kilotonnes per annum, marking over a 100% growth.
The investment involves constructing new facilities, including a building dedicated to dross and three new buildings for bag storage. Additionally, the plant will see the installation of advanced shredding, sorting, de-lacquering, and melting technologies. These advancements will allow the plant to recycle a larger volume of aluminum scrap, accommodate new types of scrap, and improve operational efficiency.
Novelis highlighted that the expanded recycling capacity and the adoption of advanced technologies are expected to result in an annual reduction of over 350,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions for Novelis Europe. This development is scheduled for commissioning in December 2026. Upon completion, the Latchford facility will be capable of recycling 100% of the UBCs collected under the forthcoming UK deposit scheme, fostering a local recycling ecosystem and eliminating the need to export scrap metal out of the UK.
