Novelis Partners with Statkraft for Renewable Energy Supply to German Facilities
Novelishas taken a significant step towards achieving carbon-neutral production. The company has entered into a long-term green energy supply contract with Statkraft, Europe's largest producer of renewable energy. This agreement will provide approximately 16 percent of the electricity needs of Novelis' German operations with 100 percent renewable energy.
The contract is set to cover up to 40 percent of the electricity requirements for the Novelis plants located in Nachterstedt, including both the Recycling and Rolling facilities. This agreement translates to about 58 GWh of electricity supplied annually, sourced entirely from renewable wind and solar power generated within Germany.
Scheduled to commence on March 1, 2024, this ten-year contract is a pivotal move in reducing Novelis' carbon emissions. Specifically, it will cut down more than 17,000 tonnes of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) annually, amounting to a total reduction of 170,000 tonnes of CO2e over the life of the contract. This initiative is part of Novelis' broader environmental strategy, aiming for a 30 percent reduction in its carbon footprint by 2026 from its 2016 levels, and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 or earlier.
