SES AI Completes Milestone in Lithium-Metal Battery Production for Urban Air Mobility
SES AI Corporation, a leading developer and manufacturer of high-performance lithium-metal batteries, has announced the successful conversion and acceptance testing of its Urban Air Mobility (UAM) lithium-metal cell production facility in Chungju, South Korea. This development represents a significant step forward in the company’s efforts to commercialize its lithium-metal battery technology.
The facility is now home to the world's first high-energy-density lithium-metal production line dedicated to UAM applications. SES AI has optimized the facility using artificial intelligence to enhance manufacturing efficiency and safety measures. The transition from an A-sample line for electric vehicles (EVs) to a UAM-focused line marks SES AI's strategic expansion into this new market, complementing its existing EV endeavors.
"We are excited about the potential of lithium metal for UAM applications as it represents a significant move toward commercialization," said Qichao Hu, founder and CEO of SES AI. "Our customers have anticipated a production line dedicated to high-energy-density lithium metal. With the GB38031-2020 safety certification and AI safety optimization, our UAM customers can expect a battery that combines high energy density with robust safety features."
SES AI first identified UAM as a promising market in December. In April, the company advanced its collaboration with Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation by signing an agreement to develop B-samples. This makes SES AI the only lithium-metal battery company with two active automotive B-sample agreements and the first to launch a lithium-metal line dedicated to UAM.
At the recent second-quarter shareholders' meeting, SES AI unveiled its "All-in on AI" strategy, which focuses on utilizing artificial intelligence across science, manufacturing, and safety to accelerate the commercialization of lithium-metal batteries.
