Antapaccay Sees Boost in Copper Recovery with Flotation Cell Upgrade

October 22, 2024

Glencore's Antapaccay copper mine in Peru has reported significant improvements in copper recovery after upgrading its flotation cells. The mine, which produces approximately 160,000 tonnes of copper concentrate annually, partnered with Metso to enhance its flotation circuit and address existing inefficiencies.

The Antapaccay flotation circuit, commissioned in 2012 and expanded in 2019, faced challenges such as low-grade feed ore and the need to increase throughput without affecting recovery rates. To address these issues, Metso introduced its FloatForce mixing mechanism and Center Launder upgrade, specifically targeting the rougher line's newest flotation cells. Completed in 2023, the retrofit aimed to improve froth management and optimize metallurgical performance.

Antonio Bravo, Metallurgy Superintendent at Antapaccay, highlighted the successful partnership with Metso: “Working with Metso has allowed us to exceed our strategic objectives, significantly improving metallurgical performance. The retrofit stabilized froth generation, increased recovery, and reduced operating costs—all while supporting our sustainability goals.”

Metso's solution included upgrading the existing flotation cells to enhance froth recovery. The result was a copper recovery rate that exceeded initial expectations, leading to higher revenue and greater operational flexibility. Additionally, the retrofit reduced energy consumption, which contributed to both cost savings and a smaller environmental footprint.

The upgrades have been effective in boosting copper production efficiency and align with Metso's sustainability objectives. Improved froth management reduced air requirements while maintaining or improving copper recovery, thereby lowering energy use and operational expenses. The partnership between Antapaccay and Metso demonstrates how targeted technological upgrades can enhance productivity while advancing sustainability in the mining sector.
