Solus Advanced Materials Expands Copper Foil Production in Hungary
South Korean copper foil producer Solus Advanced Materials has commenced mass production at its second Hungarian plant, significantly expanding its presence in Europe. The new facility, as reported by KED Global, is currently the only European production site for electric vehicle (EV) battery copper foil, with an annual output capacity of 23,000 tons. Combined with the 15,000-ton capacity of Solus’s first Hungarian plant, the company’s total production capacity in Europe has now reached 38,000 tons.
To meet the rapidly growing demand for EV batteries, Solus plans to construct a third Hungarian plant, with the goal of achieving a combined production capacity of 100,000 tons from all three facilities. This expansion positions Hungary as a key player in Europe’s EV battery supply chain, with Solus becoming a major supplier of copper foil in the region. The company’s growth aligns with broader efforts to strengthen Europe’s local supply of critical EV battery components, thereby reducing reliance on imports and supporting the growth of the European EV market.
In addition to its European expansion, Solus is establishing a strong manufacturing presence in North America. The company is developing its first copper foil plant in Canada, which is expected to begin mass production in 2026 with an initial annual capacity of 25,000 tons. Solus aims to increase its production volume in Canada to 63,000 tons, helping to meet the increasing demand from North American EV manufacturers for locally sourced components to support the transition to electric mobility.
By building production facilities in both Europe and North America, Solus Advanced Materials is positioning itself as a critical supplier in the global EV battery market. The strategic locations in Hungary and Canada will allow the company to serve two major EV markets with reduced shipping times and a more stable supply chain. These expansions enable Solus to respond flexibly to the expected surge in demand as automakers scale up their EV production capabilities.
Solus’s initiatives reflect its commitment to advancing the EV supply chain globally while catering to local market needs. The expansion strategy emphasizes scaling production to meet the accelerating adoption of electric vehicles worldwide, thereby supporting the EV industry's growth by supplying essential materials for battery production. Through these developments, Solus aims to meet rising demand for EV batteries while enhancing the sustainability and resilience of the global EV battery supply chain.
